Research Specialist, Human Sciences Research Council
Dr Vanessa Barolsky will be a Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation in Melbourne, Australia from June 2017. She recently completed a visiting fellowship at the Centre for Global Research, RMIT University, Melbourne. Prior to this she was a Research Specialist in the Democracy, Governance and Service Delivery Programme of the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa.
Her career has been shaped by a concern with social justice and human rights and the desire to create a positive social impact in highly complex and contested environments. She has been involved in researching various aspects of South Africa’s transition to democracy in some of the country’s key democratic institutions, including the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where she authored one of the chapters of the Commission’s final report.
She has led more than a dozen local and international comparative studies focusing on issues of social cohesion and social conflict; democratisation and reconciliation; political and criminal violence; policing and safety policy; law and access to justice. She has authored over 30 research publications, peer reviewed articles and book chapters on these topics and disseminated her research extensively at public forums.
