Richard Matzopoulos

Richard Matzopoulos is a Chief Specialist at the Medical Research Council’s Burden of Disease Research Unit, an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Cape Town’s School of Public Health and Family Medicine, where he co-ordinates its Violence and Injury Research programme, and Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand School of Human and Community Development.

His research centres on measuring the health and social burden of violence and injury, and evaluating interventions and policies that target upstream determinants. He advises the Provincial Government of the Western Cape on alcohol harm reduction and interpersonal violence and injury prevention and surveillance. He is one of two South African focal points for the international Violence Prevention Alliance and serves on the Steering Committee of the International Collaborative Effort on Injury Statistics and Methods.
